Sleeping on the left side influences your health in ways you never imagined. Did you know that?

Did you know that the way you sleep can actually impact your overall health? The way you sleep can cause: neck and back pain; sleep apnea; fatigue; impaired circulation; muscle stiffness; heartburn and headaches; restless sleep; premature wrinkles.

Typically, people sleep in many different positions. The main ones mentioned by experts are: on the side, on the back, and on the stomach. However, there are many variables. So, if you sleep on your side, you will stay more comfortable and reduce the risk of sleep interruption. Therefore, we will present to you the benefits of sleeping on the left side.

Benefits of sleeping on the left side:

Prevent nighttime heartburn

If you have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux, you should try sleeping on the left side. This will position the stomach below the cardiac sphincter, which is responsible for connecting the esophagus to the stomach.

By sleeping on the left side, the contents in the stomach won’t be able to flow back into the esophagus, preventing acid reflux.

Improved spleen function

The spleen is also located on the left side of the body and is part of the lymphatic system. Sleeping on the left side helps the spleen function better. Gravity increases blood flow to the spleen, improving its function and contributing to the filtration of impurities.

Aid in liver detoxification

Since the liver is located on the right side of the body, it can become congested if you sleep on the right side. Therefore, you should try sleeping on the left side to allow substances and toxins to be neutralized by the liver before being circulated or accumulated in the liver.

Enhanced lymphatic system drainage

The lymphatic system eliminates impurities and toxins from the body. Some experts have found that sleeping on the left side allows this system to drain into the thoracic duct, which is located on the left side, much more effectively. Therefore, this will accelerate and facilitate the removal of toxins from the body. Additionally, the lymphatic system utilizes protein that has leaked from cells.

Benefit for pregnant women

Many women believe that it is better to sleep on the right side during pregnancy, and this is not incorrect. However, they should know that sleeping on the left side will provide them with many benefits, especially in the third trimester. The benefits include: relieving the liver of unwanted weight, allowing it to perform multiple functions, and aiding in increased blood circulation. It also facilitates normal heart function – experts recommend sleeping on the left side because the left side of the heart pumps blood to the body. This promotes proper heart functioning during sleep. Furthermore, this position will help the circulatory system utilize gravity as a benefit.

On the left side, there is the ileocecal valve (IV) which connects the large and small intestines. So, if you want to enhance proper waste elimination, you will need to sleep on the left side. This will help waste products move from the small intestine to the large intestine and allow gravity to work and stimulate normal bowel movement.

Now that you know how beneficial sleeping on the left side can be, you should give it a try. It might be challenging to get used to it at first, but if you try, it will become a habit, and you will enjoy all the mentioned benefits above.
